In a separate incident, an unnamed German citizen was charged last week with allegedly violating the law in the country’s far east Kamchatka region and deported to their home country.
But in December 2022, the law was expanded to ban all such depictions, whether in places where minors might see them or not. President Vladimir Putin first signed the country’s “gay propaganda” into law in 2013, which initially banned any depictions of “non-traditional sexual relations or preferences” in places where minors may see them. It was only when they got there that they were informed that they were being charged with promoting “non-traditional sexual relationships to minors.” Police initially asked Xu to present immigration papers, and escorted the couple to the Yapeyeva police station after he told them he doesn’t carry them on his person. Two gay men based in Russia have reportedly been charged with violating the country’s “gay propaganda law,” with one half of the couple facing deportation toĢ3-year-old Gela Gogishvili and 21-year-old Haoyang Xu were stopped by police last Wednesday in the southwestern city of Kazan, per Newsweek.
